Department of Poultry Science
Brief Note about the Department :
The Department of Poultry Science, Veterinary College, Bengaluru, came into existence in 1973. The Department has the pride for having released two dual purpose coloured plumage chicken varieties viz., Giriraja in 1989 and Swarnadhara in 2005, which have gained popularity among farmers and researchers in the entire nation. Germplasm of native chicken from four divisions of Karnataka have been conserved here.
The Department is handling many extramural research projects funded by National and International agencies. The Department is currently offering 2 UG courses, 9 M.V.Sc courses and 6 Ph. D courses. Till date, the Department has produced 193 Masters and 40 Doctoral students in Poultry Science.
Regular training programmes are conducted by the Department to farmers, in collaboration with Central Poultry Development Organization.
Department is supplying chicks of native chicken, Giriraja and Swarnadhara to farmers and Government organisations.
Services offered by Department of Poultry Science:
- Supply of day old chicks of native chicken, Giriraja and Swarnadhara to farmers, self help groups and Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, GOK
- Supply of Giriraja and Swarnadhara parent stock to State Government farms and other Govt agencies
- Supply of hatching egg to State Government farms, Research organisations and farmers
- Organising training programmes to farmers, self help groups and deputed officers from Central and State Government
- Providing technical guidance to farmers on various aspects of poultry farming
