Livestock Research & Information Center (Sheep), Nagamangala
Brief introduction:
Livestock Research and Information Centre (Sheep) formerly known as Agricultural Research Station (ARS), Nagamangala was established during 1983 to cater the needs of the southern zone dry tract under NARP. Consequent to the formation of Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU), ARS was transferred from University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore to KVAFSU, Bidar and renamed as “Livestock Research and Information Centre (Sheep)” which started functioning w.e.f 01.04.2005.
The total area of Livestock Research and Information Centre (Sheep) comprises of about 132 acres, which is located at about 6 km away from Nagamangala town, Mandya district, Karnataka, India. Geographically Nagamangala falls under Southern Dry Zone (Zone 6) that extends from 76 19' to 76 20' South and 12 13’ to 13 4’ East. It is at an altitude of about 772 m above the Mean Sea Level (Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development & Finance Corporation, 2009).
Objectives/ Mandates:
- Conservation and Maintenance of pure breed of Mandya, Tumkur and Hassan Sheep.
- To carry out research on sheep with respect to nutrition, health, husbandry practices and other aspects.
- To demonstrate fodder and pasture development and Agro-forestry practices suitable for the region.
Location:
It is located in K. R. Pete Road, Nagamangala, Mandya district which is 5 km away from Nagamangala town in the state highway connecting Nagamangala to K. R. Pete. Nagamangala is 45 km away from Mandya and 60 Km away from Mysore and 120 Km away from Bengaluru.
