Department of Livestock Products Technology

Profile:
The Department of Livestock Products Technology was created and Establishment as an Independent Department of Meat Science, at Veterinary College, Bangalore in 1983. The department is engaged in teaching, research and extension activities of the University and also associated with organizing or participation in seminars, workshops and training programmes.

Teaching:
The Department is offering three courses (LPT 311, LPT 312 & LPT 321) for the undergraduate students. Two Senior PG and Five Junior PG students have enrolled themselves for the Master degree program for the year 2019-20.

Research:
The research activities were aimed at assessing the incidence of pathogens in the market samples of livestock products and to develop simple procedures for the decontamination of the same. And the focus has been to evaluate the efficacy of common spices used in the cookery against the common food borne pathogens in meat and meat products.  One project was completed wherein the market samples were analyzed for presence of residues of the common antibiotic, Enrofloxacin, from the food safety point of view.

Presently, the research work is focused on collection handling and processing of chicken soft offal by acidification. The preliminary work has been successful and the same is being considered for development of Pet food. In addition for the current batch of PG students, the research work has been focused on development of functional food, the eggs being enriched with very important trace minerals such as Zinc and Iron, which are deficient in Indian sub continent.

Extension:
The main focus of the department has been towards motivating the butchers and the concerned authorities in practicing hygienic principles in meat production. In this direction interactive workshop, demonstrations and training programs are conducted involving the butchers, poultry farmers and the officials. Consultancy services are extended to entrepreneurs who wish to establish slaughtering, processing and retailing of meat and meat products. In addition, awareness about Zoonotic diseases through livestock products, importance of cold chain in handling meat and shelf life of livestock products among the consumers through direct interaction and through media.

Facilities

The department of Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary College, Hebbal, Bengaluru has laboratory facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

  • The department has required facilities and equipments for microbial, molecular identification of common foodborne pathogens, extending Shelf life of livestock products and Texture Analysis of meat and milk products.
  • The Department has facilities for quality testing of meat and meat products
  • The department has postgraduate teaching faculty and offering courses for postgraduate students.
  • The department is having Poultry Slaughter House which operates 100 birds per day for practical demonstration for UG, PG Students and Entrepreneurs.
  • The department is having Retort Processing Facility for increasing shelf life and Chiller Room to store the processed meat and meat products.
  • The department is handling a project on “Antimicrobial Resistant in Pork Production Chain”

Services

The staff of the department is actively involved in the extension and corporate services for the benefits of farmers. Some of the routine activities of the department are:
