Department of Veterinary Anatomy

Brief note about the Department.

Department of Anatomy is functioning since the inception of college in 1958. The entire teaching faculty in the Department are involved in Teaching Undergraduate, Postgraduate and PhD Courses. Department of Anatomy has well established Gross Anatomy/Dissection, Histology and Post Graduate Laboratory to take up Post Graduate Research Programmes.

Initially Dept was headed by Dr. R.D. Nanjaiah, who was founder Dean of the College and Subsequently responsibility of the Dept was carried by, Dr. Trivikramarao, Dr. Abdus Salam, Dr. Chandramouly, Dr. K. V. Jamuna and contributed a lot towards development of the department. Presently the Dept is Headed by Dr. R. V. Prasad.

Post graduation was started in 1972 By Dr. Trivikrama Rao  and Dr Lucy Paily was first PG student of Anatomy Dept. PhD program started in the year 2008-09 till now 15 students were completed their PhD programmes from the Dept. of Anatomy

With the advancement of science electron microscopic study was started in Anatomy. New innovative technologies including Immunocytological studies for identification of Specific intra cellular Proteins were taken up. Molecular studies included deciphering the apoptosis process involved in Ovarian follicular Regression was attempted. Flow cytometric studies also were conducted by many students. Several molecules involved in ovarian follicular functions such as BMP and FAS ligand were identified. Several biotechnological tools such as Tunnel Method, Flowcytometry, Immuno Histochemistry were attempted to understand the folliculogenesis in the Buffalo.

As a New activity several innovative methods developed for identification of species including domestic and wild animals using materials like hairs, Skin, horn, tusk, hooves, Teeth and musk glands etc. by use of FTIR spectrum and its analysis through C-stat and R software. The Research obtained are correlated with that of DNA finger printing methods without any errors. Thus identification of wild species was developed to help the police officials in many of the vetero- legal cases.

Innovative methods of Preservation including Plastination technique using plastic tea cups and thermocol and air blow technique, corrosion cast using silicon and epoxy resin, balloon inflation technique, denture material  used for cast preparation.

A Novel method flash based E-Learning teaching veterinary Anatomy was started with the funds from VGST, Govt of Karnataka.

Dept. infrastructure is strengthened with the funds provided by DST, Govt of India

Three extra mural research projects have been sanctioned to Dept by Various agencies like , KSPCB, VGST- Gok and FIST – GOI.
