Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding
The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding was carved out of the pre-existing Department of Animal Husbandry in 1972. The department is closely engaged in teaching, research and extension activities of the University and also associated with the organization and/ or participation in seminars, workshops, training programmes and national conferences from time to time. Since its inception a close linkage has been established between the line departments like Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Karnataka Milk Federation, Karnataka Livestock Development Agency, Karnataka Sheep and Wool Development Corporation, Poultry Corporation, Karnataka Meat and Meat Products Corporation, various National Institutesviz., ICAR-NDRI (SRS), CFSP & TI and non-government organizations through conducting collaborative research, training programmes as resource personnel and discussions to solve the problems of the farmers.
The department is involved in teaching of under-graduate and post-graduate students in the field of Animal Genetics and Breeding. Master’s degree (M.V.Sc) was started in 1972 and Doctoral programme in 1979. Till now a total of 90 Masters and 31 doctoral degree programmes have been completed.
Department isalsoinvolved in conducting research work of field application in different livestock and poultry species. The major areas of research include Quantitative/Biometric Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics, Biochemical Genetics and Bioinformatics.
The staff of the department is actively involved in the extension activities for the benefits of farmersviz., Providing information on livestock breeding, rearing and conservation to farmers, Participation/ organizing Pashumelas or Livestock shows, Radio talks/ TV shows, Training programmes to Field Veterinarians/farmers, Consultancy Service, Breeding policy for different livestock species and Preparation of bulletins/atlas/profiles on livestock breeds of Karnataka.
