VETERINARY MICROBIOLOGY

Department of Veterinary Microbiology has three separate laboratories; Bacteriology and Mycology laboratory, Immunology laboratory and Virology laboratory for under graduate and post graduate teaching. In addition, a separate research laboratory is also available for carrying out post graduate research.

The Department is equipped with Biosafety cabinet, Four-in-one (Bright field, Dark field,  Phase-contrast & Fluorescent Microscope), Trinocular Research microscope with camera, Inverted microscope, BOD Incubator, Deep freezer (-20Ā° C), ELISA reader, Immuno-electrophoresis apparatus, Refrigerated centrifuge, Freeze dryer, High speed centrifugeĀ  along with routinely used laboratory equipments.

The staff of the department has successfully completed a research project on mastitis. In addition, two more research projects are ongoing, one on wild life and the other on otitis externa in dogs. The faculty members are serving as Co-Principal Investigators for two extra-mural research projects funded by external agencies.

The Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary College, Shivamogga is well equipped with all the facilities as per the recommendation of the Veterinary Council of India for the conduct of both theory and practical classes for the under graduate students. The Department offers entire one year Veterinary Microbiology course for the II B. V. Sc & A.H. students as per the guidelines of MSVE 2016 covering all the topics of bacteriology, mycology, immunology, virology and biotechnology. The department also offers total of 11 courses for the PG students.

Presently, the departmental faculty members are recognized PG teachers serving as members of advisory committee for PG students. The teaching faculties are eligible to be a major advisor for PG students. At present (2019-20), one student has completed masters and five PG students are on roll. The students can get free access to good number of journals through the internet facility available in the department. Further, the students can even access all the recent microbiology text books (both soft and hard copy) in the department as well as in the library.
