LIVESTOCK FARM COMPLEX

The Department of Livestock Farm Complex (LFC) was established to impart various livestock farm practices and practical skills for undergraduate students and to provide research facilities for post graduate students and also give practical exposure through training programs to farmers and to the officers of the state government serving farm community.

Units under Livestock Farm complex:

  1. Dairy Unit: The dairy unit is comprised of crossbred Jersey, Holstein Friesian, Deoni, Hallikar and Gir cattle. The animals are maintained for teaching, research and extension purposes. The unit also has separate calf pens, fodder chopping machines, vermicompost units, silo pits and farm ponds. Milk is supplied to hostels and staff of the college.
  2. Fodder Unit:  Fodder section is involved in cultivation of different varieties of perennial  (15) and annual fodder crops under irrigation (10 acres) and maize grain variety crops are grown in the area of 25 acres of land to utilize the maize for preparation of concentrate feed mixture and the dry fodder residue for feeding of ruminants. The fodder museum is maintained by UG students and 10 varieties of fodder trees are available in the campus.
  3. Sheep and Goat Unit:  The unit maintains deccani breed of Sheep and Osmanabadi breed of Goats under semi-intensive system of rearing.
  4. Piggery Unit: The Piggery/swine unit was established under RKVY project and Large White Yorkshire (LWY) and Duroc breeds of pigs are maintained.
  5. Poultry and Hatchery Unit: This unit has a capacity of 1000 commercial layers  (cage system), 1000 broilers, 500 Swarnadhara parent breeders, 700 housing capacity of semi automatic shed, 200 battery brooders, hatchery unit of 12,000 setting capacity and small scale of 500 capacity (setter cum hatcher). Chicks, hatching eggs and commercial eggs are sold to the farmers and staff.
  6. Small Animal House: A well established air conditioned laboratory animal house with different species as per the CPCSEA standards are maintained for both teaching and research purpose.
  7. Feed Processing unit: The unit has feed processing unit comprising grinder and horizontal mixer  for preparing concentrate feed mixture for different livestock and poultry units. The mineral mixture unit and a shredder are also available in the unit.
