ANIMAL GENETICS AND BREEDING

The department of Animal Genetics and Breeding is equipped for quality research. It possesses a well equipped molecular genetics laboratory and software facility for studies on breeding and molecular data. Further, it is also equipped with computer laboratory having internet connectivity and interactive board facility.

The thrust areas of research of the department are conservation studies of Hassan sheep and Amruthmahal cattle. The department has completed three University funded research projects and ongoing project is on Herd registration and Field performance recording of Amruthmahal cattle of Karnataka (KLDA sponsored with a outlay of 41 lakhs) and Molecular genetic studies of gene (NRF2) related to endurance in Amruthmahal cattle.

The department has conducted several training programs on animal conservation, and breeding to the farmers and Veterinary Officers. One state level workshop on ‘Conservation and optimum utilization of animal genetic resources of Karnataka was organized by the department’. The department is providing facilities for design of experiments and statistical analysis of data for staff and student research programs of the college.
