MAJOR FINDING OF RESEARCH PROJECTS (2017-18)  

I.  ANIMAL AND POULTRY SCIENCE

ANIMAL AND POULTRY SCIENCE

  • Growth performance of commercial broilers supplemented with processed organic waste was evaluated at veterinary college, Bengaluru and recommended to supplement processed organic diet up to maximum of 15%  of broiler diets by replacing maize and soyabean meal. The cost of production of processed organic waste shpold be less than Rs. 8/Kg.
  • Characterization, conservation and improvement of indigenous poultry and supply of improved germplasm to farmers.
  • Dept. of Veterinary Extension, Veterinary college, Bengaluru developed android based App on livestock production system for farmers. More than 30000 farmers have downloaded the app.
  • Developed feeding strategies for optimal use of lucerne and sesbania in stover based dairy cow diet to increase nutritive value, digestibility and productivity of the animal.

II. PRE AND PARA CLINICAL SCIENCE

  1. Established world class OIE-CVA Rabies Diagnostic laboratory at Veterinary College, Bengaluru. This is the only recognized laboratory in Asia by OIE for rapid detection and diagnosis of “Rabies” disease. The samples are being received from all over India and several hundred faculty across the country have been trained.
  2. Established Center of Excellence in Pathology and modern histopathology and molecular pathology laboratories, International study center on animal diseases  under C.L.Davis Foundation, USA and Center of Advanced faculty training in Parasitology.
  3. Developed innovative flash based e-learning modules and standardized plastination technique for biological specimens to promote self-learning of veterinary anatomy.
  4. Established Center of Advanced faculty training in Parasitology –imparting training to Young teachers and scientists from all over the country.
  5. Developed scaffold technology from the fresh hollow organ matrix by modified decellularization method for biomedical applications.
  6. Detected Theileria in 30 samples and  Babesia organisms in 5 samples of cattle using molecular techniques by species specific PCR.
  7. Detected antibiotic residue in cattle milk of Hassan district by paperstrip assay kit of ICAR.

III. CLINICAL SCIENCE

  • Semen bank for small ruminants was established under SUJALA III project at Veterinary college, Bengaluru.
  • Many investigation were carried out on medical and surgical problems of livestock

IV. DAIRY SCIENCE

  • VTCC network project on Dairy microbes was undertaken and 104 Nos of lactic acid bacteria have been characterized for identity and features and submitted to NCDC, Karnal .
  • Technical Consultancy service was given to Dharwad milk union for design and commissioning of  Mega 30 tonn/day fully automatic milk powder plant and project is in production with full capacity.

V. Fisheries Science

  1. Role of dietary supplementation of DL – Methionine on growth, survival, immune response and disease resistance of Indian major carp was evaluated and recommended @ 0.20% for improvement in growth and 20 g/kg for improvement of NBT value in presence of algae.
  2.  Eight bioactive compounds from marine bacteria were isolated and growth performance of these isolates optimized for the production of Antimicrobial resistance.
  3. Conducted surveillance of shrimp diseases in coastal waters of Karnataka. 119 samples showed positive for WSSV, 89 for EHP, 21 for IHHNV, 2 for MBV and HPV.
  4. Conducted surveillance of fresh water fish and shellfish disease in Karnataka. Two awareness programmes organized and distributed the bulletin on the disease surveillance programme to the farmers and officials of Fisheries department which in turn helps for surveillance of disease and solve the health management problems.
  5. Monitoring the coastal water quality of Mangaluru and Udupi districts receiving effluents from various factories viz., MCF,  UPCL, BASF, MSEZ, MRPL and Sequent Pvt Ltd.
  6. Software has been developed for recording fisheries activities in the entire Karnataka state including marine, brackish and fresh waters by FRIC, Hebbal under the project survey on status of fish production, supply and demand, processing industries and management strategies in Karnataka state.

MAJOR FINDINGS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS (2018-19)

I.  Animal and poultry Science

  • Crossing of indigenous breed of sheep with exotic breed – Dorper was evaluated. The performance of offspring was not satisfactory. Hence, breeding of pure indigenous breed over exotic and heavy mutton sheep breed (Dorper) has been recommended.
  • Herd registration and field performance recording of indigenous breeds such as Amrithmahal and Deoni cattle have been completed.
  • Under Sujala – III world bank assisted project various livestock and fisheries activities were undertaken in 11 districts of Karnataka. Farmers Participatory research on livestock production system such as alternate silage making methods using silo bags, improvement of milk fat and SNF, enrichment of dry fodders, fodder nursery, etc. were undertaken
  • Role of supplementation of Slow Release Nitrogen Product (SRNP) and fibrolytic enzyme supplementation on lactation performance of Dairy Animals was evaluated and lower levels of enzyme supplementation (5 to 15 mg) improved kinetic gas production in roughages and performance of lactating buffaloes in terms of DMI, nutrient digestibility, milk yield and composition.
  • Study on determination of Bioactivity of synthetic Vitamin E acetate: Evaluation using antioxidant properties in broiler birds conducted and the bioactivity of synthetic Vitamin E using antioxidant activity could not be established.
  • Role of Montmorillonite on performance and health of broiler chickens against aflatoxicosis  was evaluated and found that binder can protect birds from aflatoxicosis to a great extent at high level of contamination.
  • Estimated the prevalance of M  Bovis in livestock in small holder dairy farms, Identified drivers for use of antimicrobials and developed intervention strategies under the study on “Promoting Health, Livelihood and Sustainable Livestock Systems; India Research Initiative on Peri-Urban Human-Animal-Environment Interface” .
  • Supplied 1458 Nos. of 1st week/ 2nd week/ 3rd week/4th week chicks to the rural population at low cost under the Project “Strengthening of Poultry farm at Poultry science Department, Veterinary college, KVAFSU, Hebbal,   Bangalore for empowerment of rural youth and rural women”
  • Supplied 14332 Nos. of Day old parent chicks to the Veterinary College Bidar and Shivamogga and other State Poultry Farms like Hessaraghatta, Malavalli, KCPF Dharwad, Koila under the project “Automation of Giriraja breeder house”.

II. PRE AND PARA CLINICAL SCIENCE

  • An effective inactivated vaccine against classical swine fever in pigs was developed.
  • Rabies antigen at “G” protein was successfully cloned and expressed in Bacculo virus. This will be used for development of a quantitative ELISA as part of on-going DBT funded project.
  • Under OIE twinned - KVAFSU - Common wealth veterinary association project, a world class laboratory was established for  diagnosis of Rabies using dRIT Kits. Large number of faculty from many veterinary universities were trained regarding collection of samples and diagnosis of rabies.
  • Role of wound healing activity of various silk proteins were evaluated and the combination of Silver, Centella, Silk fibrin powder from mulberry showed best wound healing activity in rabbits.
  • Effect of halquinol on intestinal motility in rats and its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was studied and MIC of halquinol was found @ 4 µg/mL against  both E coli and Salmonella gallinarum.  
  • Documented about 85 herbal varieties as ethnoveterinary practices adopted by local healers and veterinarians
  • An inactivated MAP vaccine for sheep blue tongue disease was  evaluated and found protection in the vaccinated sheep against challenge infection.
  • DNA based molecular genetic markers for  selective breeding in livestock for disease resistance and improvement of producion were identified.

III.  CLINICAL SCIENCE

  1. Role of Monensin in Augmenting the fertility in anestrus buffalo heifers was evaluated and recommended to use Monensin with or without concentrate to enhance cyclicity and conception in delayed pubertal buffalo heifers.  
  2. Evaluated the healing pattern of absorbable test suture in Newzealand white rabbits and it was found that the oval shaped absorbable polyglycolic acid sutures were better than the round shaped sutures in terms of lumen size, granulation tissue formation, inflammation, proliferation of collagen fibres and smooth muscle fibres.

IV.  DAIRY SCIENCE

  • Developed of Functional Paneer Spread.    
  • Ready-to-Use Enriched Spiced Khoa was prepared using whey proten concentrate, regi malt and masala extract at 10,8 and 4 levels.. 
  • It was found that addition of whey solids with nuts imparted value addition for milk based fruit and nut bags. Ready – to- cook kheer mix was standardized.
  • Development of  Turbo Mixer for High Non Newtonian Foods and performance evaluation for various foods has been undertaken.  

V.  FISHERIES SCIENCE

  • Developed few machinary such as pedal operated fish descaling cum slicing machine and small scale fish meat picking unit. 
  • Developed machinary such as LoT based portable grader with counting mechanism for fish Seeds and fish grading tool for segregation of fish seeds based on size.
  • Production of Silage using sea food industry waste for enrichment / formulation of poultry feed.     
  • Total 11 species of True Mangroves  and 10 species of Associated Mangroves were recorded in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District.
  • Production of Triploid (3n) generation of common carp using heat shock and cold shock treatment.
  • Recorded a phenomenal shift in food chain behavior in the coast of Karnataka. Biological diversity increase towards carnivorous species- Jelly fishes, chaetognaths , Polychaetes and Urochordiates in coastal waters of Mangaluru.
  • Monitoring the coastal water quality of Mangaluru and Udupi districts receiving effluents from various factories viz., MCF,  UPCL, BASF, MSEZ, MRPL and Sequent Pvt Ltd etc.
