The Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary College, Shivamogga is well equipped with all facilities as per the recommendation of the Veterinary Council of India for the smooth conduct of theory and practical classes for the under graduate students. The Department offers courses like General Veterinary Microbiology (VMC-211, 1+1), Veterinary Imunology and Serology (VMC-221, 1+1), Systematic Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology (VMC-311, 2+1) and Systematic Veterinary Virology (VMC-321, 2+1) as per the guidelines of VCI 2008, and Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosis (VLD-421 & 511) for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and final year B.V.Sc & A.H. students as per the guidelines of MSVE 2008.
At present the subject of Microbiology is headed by a Associate Professor. In the Department of Veterinary Microbiology one Associate-professor and the other faculty members of Assistant professor Cadre (03) are present. Three faculty members are recognized PG teachers and two of them handled Microbiology courses at Bidar veterinary college and veterinary college of Shimoga. Also one faculty member is member of advisory committee for two completed M,V,Sc students and other faculty member for one completed M.V.Sc student.
There are three Separate laboratories for teaching (03) is available for under graduate teaching, which includes: Bacteriology &Mycology laboratory, Immunology laboratory and Virology laboratory. In addition separate research laboratory are also available for the use of Post Graduate teaching and research. Dept.of Microbiology is having some sophisticated equipments like.. Laminar flow cabinet , Research microscope (trinocular) with CCTV, Inverted microscope, BOD Incubator , Deep freeze (-20o C), ELISA reader, Immuno-electrophoresis apparatus, Refrigerated centrifuge (table top), Four-in-one Microscope Bright field, Dark field, Phase-contrast & Fluorescent Microscope, Freeze dryer , High speed centrifuge, etc.,in addition to routine laboratory equipments. The Microbiology Section has handled one research project and two more research projects are ongoing. Also Faculty members are CO-PI for two extra-mural research projects funded by external agencies.
